Mersin Turkey surprises me! I had no idea what to expect when I first arrived in Turkey, and this southern city charmed me with its combination of history, scenery and food.
The ancient monuments are really cool to see, and it’s really amazing to think about what life was like for the people who lived here all those years ago.
Later, I visited the ancient ruins of Pompeiopolis; A Roman city that seemed to be preserved. Walking among the theater ruins and colonized streets, I could almost imagine the bustling markets and daily life.
And of course no trip to Mersin is complete without some fun in the beach sun! The dark volcanic sand and crystal clear waters of Cleopatra Beach mesmerized me.
However, of course there is more to Mersin than history and beaches. I visited the Yumurtalık Peninsula National Park and saw a landscape that took my breath away. A beautiful hike through canopy lit jagged boulders and free falling waterfalls was a nice change from the city and reconnected me to the land.
Food, Mersin Turkey is heaven for foodies! Mersin tantouni – I loved this local delicacy of thinly sliced meat wrapped in warm flatbread. Easy to make, but jam-packed with flavor—I couldn’t stop eating it my entire road trip.
Mersin Turkey is not a typical tourist city and that is what makes it special. Local life full of history, natural beauty and passion. Located along the Mediterranean coast, Mersin is one of Turkey’s most off-the-tourist-track destinations.

Mersin wasn’t originally on my itinerary when planning around Turkey, but before I knew it a flight cancellation made me take a big detour here, and every time I visit this southern Mediterranean city, it surprises me.
History friends, rejoice! Mersin is one of the most layered cities. One of my wanderings led me to discover Yumuktepe, a sprawling mound and site filled with stories of artifacts from the earliest human habitation. The place took my breath away to stand among the ancient ruins and see the relics preserved for two thousand years.
I felt like I was stuck in the days when citizens went about their daily business.
Today the light illuminates one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. The black volcanic sand was foreign to me and felt attractive against my feet, while the sea was crystal clear even though it was about 6 degrees cooler than Labuan Bajo. Cleopatra is also said to have bathed here, according to local people.
N A T U R E B O U N D S Mersin has more to see than its coastline; The interior hinterland has excellent natural resources. Yumurtalik Peninsula National Park was my sanctuary. Getting back to nature provided a nice little refreshment from the hustle and bustle of corporate life in this huge city.
Mersin is heaven to eat, tantouni which is warm flatbread encased in a pile of wonderfully aromatic thinly sliced meat. I had the privilege of eating it multiple times during the rest of my journey, and every nibble of the flavor felt like an act of synesthesia.
Mersin’s beauty lies in its authenticity. This city is not overwhelmed by tourists, which gives you a great feeling of real Turkish life. The locals were always very nice with a friendly smile or information. Forget the crowded tourist attractions and choose Mersin as your new destination instead.
